Al-Jouf Emerges as Major Fig Producer in Saudi Arabia

Al-Jouf Region has established itself as a significant contributor to Saudi Arabia’s fig production, ranking fifth in the Kingdom with an annual output of 874 tons, which contributes to the nation’s overall fig yield of 28,000 tons.

Local farmer Bassam Al-Haboub planted 1,200 fig trees two years ago. Focusing on having high-quality soil and water, he cultivates a fig variety known for its abundant yield, firmness, and transportability, he said.

A graduate in agriculture, Al-Haboub has leveraged his expertise to market his produce locally. He praised the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture for organizing festivals that provide a platform for farmers to display their products and access valuable support services.

According to the ministry, Saudi Arabia is entirely self-sufficient in fig production, which it cultivates on 1,421 hectares in 11 regions.
