Al-Jubeir Emphasizes Kingdom’s Commitment to Cooperate to Protect Oceans and Marine Resources at International Event

San Jose: Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Member and Climate Affairs Envoy Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, who is attending the High Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change, held here on June 7 and 8, stressed that the Kingdom is committed to cooperating with the international community to protect oceans and marine resources.

In his speech at the event, he said the Kingdom’s local efforts and the Saudi Vision 2030 align with its international commitments to protecting global biodiversity, and this is made clear in the Saudi Green Initiative, which aims to have ensured the protection of 30% of the Kingdom’s terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.

Al-Jubeir highlighted the Kingdom’s participation in international negotiations that resulted in a legally binding agreement for the sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions, as well as in negotiations aimed at establishing a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution affecting the marine environment.

He also highligh
ted the Kingdom’s leading international efforts during its presidency of the G20, in 2020, when it launched the Coral Research and Development Accelerator Platform (CORDAP) to complement ongoing international efforts to protect the marine environment.

He also underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to protecting Red Sea marine and coastal ecosystems, highlighting the establishment of the General Organization for Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea (SHAMS).

‘The Kingdom actively contributes to regional efforts to protect and preserve the marine environment in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. It is also a member of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment,’ he said.
