Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has underlined that the United States’ presence in the east of the Euphrates region is unjustifiable, so the Americans should pull out of the region.
Following the Astana peace summit in Tehran, President Raisi made the remarks in a press conference along with his Russian and Turkish counterparts on Tuesday night.
We held the seventh Astana peace summit, where the heads of the three countries put forward issues such as emphasizing Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the fact that the Syrian government should have sovereignty over the entire country, Raisi told reporters.
Therefore, the presence of Americans in the Eastern Euphrates region under any pretext is not justifiable and they should withdraw from the area, he noted.
Describing Syria as the emblem of steadfastness, resistance, and fight against terrorism, the president stated that all countries resisted in this regard, but today’s concern in Syria especially in Idlib has its roots in the presence of terrorists, which requires a serious determination by all countries in order to fight terrorism, and that it is certain that the serious confrontation will definitely end up in peace, he added.
In the Astana peace summit, the continuation of dispatching humanitarian aid to the oppressed Syrian people by all sides and member states was underlined in order to help the nation to get rid of economic woes, the chief executive added.
No measure should be taken to violate Syria’s sovereignty and all efforts should be in line with the establishment of the Syrian government, Raisi concluded.
The seventh summit meeting of Astana peace process guarantors was held with the participation of the presidents of the three countries – Iran, Russia, and Turkey – in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Tuesday evening.
Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and Iran’s Ebrahim Raisi held talks in the framework of the Astana format, stressing the need for respecting Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The summits were initiated in Kazakhstan’s capital in January 2017, so the peace negotiations were called Astana peace talks back then.
The talks retained the same name as the Astana negotiations after Kazakhstan changed the name of its capital city to Nur-Sultan in 2019.
