Arab League Secretary-General Stresses Importance of Strengthening Cooperation with UN to Address Current Crises in the Region

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit emphasized that the global challenges we face today are interconnected and converge on the crucial need to uphold multilateralism and international cooperation.

This statement was made during Aboul Gheit’s participation on the second day of the Future Summit, currently being held in New York, according to a statement distributed by the Arab League General Secretariat in Cairo today.

He noted that these challenges manifest in issues such as rising temperatures and climate change, the gap between the developing world and wealthy nations-particularly in relation to climate finance-equitable sharing of the burdens of adapting to climate change, and the serious challenges posed by new technologies, especially artificial intelligence.

Aboul Gheit pointed out that the United Nations Security Council, in its current form, no longer reflects the realities of today’s world and no longer effectively serves the goals of multilateral action in existing conflicts. He cite
d the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza as the most prominent example, noting that the council has been unable to reach a resolution, and even when a resolution was issued, it has yet to be enforced.

Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of strengthening and continuing collaboration with the United Nations to address the root causes of current crises in the Arab region and globally, with the aim of improving the future for coming generations.
