Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for International Affairs Abbas Araghchi said Iran is now closer to an agreement in the JCPOA talks than ever before.
In an interview with Al Jazeera TV network, Araghchi, who leads Iran’s negotiating team in Vienna answered questions about the nuclear talks in the Austrian capital.
He was asked to comment on the recent remarks of the Director General of the International Atomi Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi who believes the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) should be revived before a new government is formed.
“Grossi probably has no knowledge of political dynamism in Iran,” he said, adding that the nuclear negotiations are a major foreign policy issue, and decisions are made at the highest levels of the system.
He further noted that reaching an agreement depended on meeting the key demands and resolving the fundamental concerns of the Islamic Republic … whether in this government or in the next one.
Of course, I must say that we are closer to an agreement now than any time before, and I personally very much hope that an agreement will be reached in this government.
Araghchi further stated that the main problem with the negotiations is the Americans’ approach who are unable to give up their excessive addiction to sanctions and at the same fail to understand that sanctions are already a failed solution.
Trump is gone, but his illegal and criminal sanctions are still in place, he stressed.
Actually, the Iranian top diplomat noted, the new US administration has not nullified Trump’s policy of maximum pressure and thinks it is capable of achieving what Trump unable to gain.
He said Americans sit by the negotiations table with this in mind.
The ongoing negotiations are very complex and delicate in terms of technical issues, but political will on the side of all parties is what is needed for developing an agreement.
Araghchi said national interests are the only factors that determines the success or failure of the negotiations.
