Aseer’s Sahfa: An Enduring Symbol of Heritage and Hospitality

– Sahfa, a traditional wooden serving platter, holds a special place in Aseer’s culinary heritage. Crafted from the durable hardwood of the western plane tree (Platanus occidentalis), sahfa is a symbol of hospitality and a testament to the region’s rich cultural tradition.

Sahfa’s production dates back centuries, reflecting the close relationship between humans and nature. Skilled local artisans like Hassan Al-Asmari continue to preserve this ancient craft, ensuring its legacy for future generations.

Al-Asmari told an SPA reporter that the process of creating a sahfa is intricate and time consuming. It involves selecting the right wood, preserving it for a year, and carefully shaping and decorating the platter. Sahfa’s unique designs and decorative elements make it a centerpiece on Aseer tables.

Not only is the sahfa a cultural icon, it is also a practical and functional piece. Its antibacterial properties and its insulating properties make it safe for serving food.

The sahfa industry contributes to t
he local economy by providing jobs and supporting handicraft production. As a symbol of Aseer’s heritage, sahfa continues to be cherished and passed down through generations.
