Environment Ministry Distributes First Batch of Locally Produced Tissue-Cultured Strawberry Mother Plants to Farmers

Riyadh: The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, in collaboration with a specialized agricultural cooperative association for strawberries and other fruits, has distributed the first batch of this year’s tissue-cultured strawberry mother plants to farmers.

According to the ministry, the strawberry mother plants produced in its laboratory are of high quality and disease free, and this will positively affect the quality of the crops. It also said that all strawberry mother plants grown in the Kingdom were imported from abroad.

This step, the ministry stressed, aligns with its general strategy of supporting the agricultural sector, achieving food security, increasing its contribution to the non-oil GDP, and ensuring the quality of horticultural crops, in accordance with the Saudi Vision 2030 goals.

The ministry also pointed out that the various varieties of strawberries are among the horticultural crops that have successfully been cultivated in all regions of the Kingdom and are now produced local
ly, which ensures that farmers have access to healthy local seedlings, and avoid the potential market fluctuations in exporting countries that can lead to a shortage of imported seedlings and cause significant harm to them.

The ministry supports farmers throughout the Kingdom with high-yield quality seedlings and seeds of economically successful varieties and types, in addition to providing advisory and awareness programs.
