Etidal and Telegram Remove Over 18 Million Extremist Content in Q2 of 2024


Riyadh: The Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology (Etidal), in collaboration with Telegram, closed 660 extremist channels and removed 18,611,232 pieces of extremist content linked to three terrorist organizations, ISIS, Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, and Al-Qaeda, in the second quarter of 2024.

The removed ISIS content was the highest: 14,857,909 pieces and 305 channels were closed.

Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham had 3,521,969 pieces removed and 281 channels closed, while Al-Qaeda had 231,354 pieces removed and 74 channels closed.

The peak of extremist activity was on Monday, June 17 2024, corresponding to 11 Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 Hijri at the start of the Hajj season, with over two million extremist pieces removed.

The three terrorist organizations’ propaganda activity increased by 12.82% in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter.

Since their collaboration started in February 2022, Etidal and Telegram have removed a staggering 93,999,551 items of extremist content and closed 14,193 channels used
to spread such propaganda.

The removed extremist propaganda content varied between PDF files, video clips and audio recordings.
