Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty has appointed Ambassador Tamim Khallaf as the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supervisor of the Public Diplomacy Department, succeeding Ambassador Ahmed Abu-Zeid.
Ambassador Khallaf previously served as deputy assistant foreign minister for North American affairs.
He also worked as a political counsellor and media office supervisor at the Egyptian embassy in Washington.
Additionally, he worked at Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva and the Egyptian embassy in Brazil.
Over a decade, he engaged in multilateral diplomatic work, managed disarmament issues and peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and represented Egypt in various international meetings and conferences at the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Khallaf was Egypt’s chief negotiator in the negotiations for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which the United Nations adopted in 2017.
Moreover, he was seconded to the pres
idency and worked at the office of the Secretary-General of the Arab League.
The veteran diplomat holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the American University in Cairo (1999) and a master’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics (2003).
In addition, he was also a fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University (2008-2009).
Ambassador Khallaf is replacing Ambassador Ahmed Abu-Zeid, who became Egypt’s ambassador to Brussels (Belgium), Luxembourg, the European Union, and NATO.
Abu-Zeid was appointed the Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson in September 2022.
