Germany pledges new military aid to Ukraine worth 2.7 billion euros

Germany announced Saturday that it will provide new military aid to Ukraine worth 2.7 billion euros (2.9 billion US dollars), thus doubling the amount of military assistance it has offered to Ukrainian forces since outbreak of the war late February of last year.

The Federal Ministry of Defense said the new aid would include more than 20 Marder personnel carriers, 30 Leopard 1 tanks and four Iris T air defense systems.

The statement quoted German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius as confirming his country’s commitment to provide weapons to Ukraine, saying that his government “reiterates that Germany is serious” in giving military aid to the Ukrainian army.

The German official reiterated the policy of the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz regarding the war in Ukraine, saying that his country will not delay dispatch of military aid to Kyiv. “It is still necessary,” he stated.

These statements coincided with reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky might visit the German capital, Berlin, tomorrow, Sunday.
