India Landslide Death Toll Rises to 143

New Delhi, The toll from landslides caused by heavy rains in the Wayanad district in the Indian state of Kerala has risen to at least 143 dead and around 186 injured.

Local media outlets reported today that hundreds of people are still missing, noting that several government agencies as well as about 300 Indian army personnel, navy teams and air force helicopters are taking part in search and rescue efforts.

The landslides have caused the destruction of many houses and uprooted trees. The state government had declared mourning yesterday; flags had been lowered at half-mast, and all official celebrations during those two days had been suspended.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the disaster, and his support for the families of the dead and injured. He also assured the state chief minister that support will be sent to the authorities, and that compensation will be paid to those affected.
