Iran and Iraq Strengthen Security Cooperation Through Bilateral Agreement.

Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji have reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to deepening security cooperation, emphasizing the intertwined stability of both nations. In a meeting in Tehran on Sunday, Araghchi lauded the ‘very good’ relations between Tehran and Baghdad in all fields. He highlighted that enhancing security cooperation is crucial for further developing bilateral relations, particularly in economic sectors.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araghchi stated, “We consider Iraq’s security as Iran’s security and we hope that with the full implementation of the security agreement, sustainable security would be established in the border areas of the two countries.” He also referred to the achievements of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s September trip to Iraq, noting that the president actively pursued the implementation of agreements between the two countries and the comprehensive expansion of bilateral ties.

Al-Araji, on his p
art, briefed Araghchi on the progress made in implementing the Tehran and Baghdad security agreement, asserting Iraq’s determination to fully enact the accord. He emphasized the excellent bilateral relations between Iran and Iraq, describing them as “brotherly neighbors” in the region. Al-Araji further stated that Iraq views Iran’s security as its own and that any hostile actions against Iran would be met with measures by both the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The security pact, signed by Tehran and Baghdad in 2023, includes provisions for disarming separatist terrorist groups operating against Iran. During President Pezeshkian’s first foreign trip to Iraq in September, he informed Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani about the importance of implementing the bilateral security pact to combat terrorism and adversaries of both nations.
