Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in a telephone talk with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mirjana Spoljaric on Thursday said that Tehran is ready to immediately send humanitarian aid and rescue teams to Idlib, Syria.
During a telephone conversation on Thursday, Amirabdollahian and Spoljaric discussed the latest relief situation for earthquake victims in Syria and Turkiye.
Pointing to the humanitarian situation in Syria and the need for international communities to pay attention to the country’s special situation, Amirabdollahian noted that the situation of the Syrian people has worsened due to sanctions besides the earthquake.
Describing the humanitarian situation in the Idlib region of Syria as sensitive, Iran’s top diplomat stressed Tehran is ready to immediately send relief teams and humanitarian aid to Idlib, and the ICRC is expected to coordinate with the Iranian Red Crescent to send and distribute humanitarian aid to Idlib, which is out of the Syrian government’s control.
Spoljaric, for her part, thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its humanitarian efforts and said that the ICRC will take extensive measures to assess the situation of earthquake victims in Syria, and after considering the circumstances and will make the necessary arrangements about the valuable proposals of the Islamic Republic of Iran and how they will be implemented.
An Iranian civilian plane carrying aid for Syrians affected by the earthquake arrived at Damascus Airport in the capital of Syria early on Tuesday, according to a report by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The 45-ton humanitarian cargo was comprised of essential supplies like food, medicine, and hygiene items, said the report.
Iran announced its readiness to provide relief to people affected by two huge earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria on Monday.
A strong quake jolted the south of Turkiye and the North of Syria on Monday morning. The 7.8-degree earthquake on Richter scale inflicted heavy damage on buildings and caused lots of casualties, and relief and rescue teams are still busy removing the debris and finding the people trapped under the wreckage.
The number of deaths in both countries keeps increasing as the corpses are discovered and is exceeding a thousand.
The latest updates of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, show that the death toll tops 15,000.
