The Iranian Navy said on Thursday that it had warned away a US nuclear-powered submarine that was cruising off Iran’s territorial waters in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Navy’s Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani was quoted by Iran’s official news agency as saying that Iran’s Fateh submarine had spotted an American nuclear-powered submarine, forcing it to surface and change its track.

He added that the American submarine was given the necessary warnings as it had closed in on the Iranian territorial waters “to some extent”, according to the agency.
