Jeddah, once renowned for its vibrant markets and caravanserais, offers a glimpse into the city’s rich past.
The “Qaisariya market” was a bustling hub of interconnected shops. Among the most notable historical caravanserais in Jeddah were Khan Al-Qasbah (a shop selling fabric), Khan Al-Dallaleen (middlemen), and Khan Al-Attarin (perfumers).
Today, the customs of Jeddah’s hospitable people continue to bring families and loved ones together. The tradition of decorating homes with lights and singing celebratory songs creates a unique and charming atmosphere that permeates all occasions in the central historical area.
The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah), dedicated to preserving the history of Saudi cities and sites, has meticulously documented the history of Jeddah, focusing on its buildings, neighborhoods, markets, mashrabiyas (latticework windows), and architectural features. Historic Jeddah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, remains testament to the city’s rich heritage.

he foundation also has documented King Abdulaziz’s visit to Jeddah in 1925, and his temporary residence in Nassif House.
Jeddah, once a close-knit community centered around the sea, has evolved into a major city and a gateway to the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah.
The Saudi government has recognized the historical and cultural significance of Jeddah’s landmarks and architectural monuments. In 2020, the Jeddah Historic District program, affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, was created to rehabilitate and develop the city’s urban, economic, social, cultural, historical, and environmental aspects. The program focuses on providing public facilities and services to meet the needs of residents and visitors.
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has generously supported the restoration of 56 historic buildings in Jeddah that were at risk of collapse, allocating SAR50 million from his personal funds. In 2021, His Royal Highness also launch
ed the Historic Jeddah Revival Project, which aims to revitalize the region’s spaces, promote cultural projects and entrepreneurship, and enhance the visitor experience.
The government’s sponsorship of such projects aligns with its commitment to preserving the Kingdom’s historical and cultural heritage. By rehabilitating and protecting Jeddah’s historic buildings, the government aims to transform them into global landmarks and support historical tourism in Saudi Arabia, in line with Vision 2030.
