Lebanon: 3 people killed and 16 injured as a result of a fire and rebellion in the Zahle prison

Three people were killed and 16 were injured, today, Friday, as a result of a number of prisoners setting fire to the Zahle Men’s City Prison in the Bekaa, east of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The Lebanese News Agency reported that a number of inmates led a rebellion inside the prison and set fires inside some rooms, noting that the flames spread to the upper floors of the building.

It added that the final toll so far amounted to three dead and 16 wounded, noting that the army and security services carried out a heavy deployment around the prison building, while civil defense members worked to extinguish the fire, remove prisoners from inside the rooms, and transfer the injured to hospitals to receive treatment.

For its part, the Lebanese Ministry of Interior and Municipalities said in a statement that Bassam Mawlawi, Minister of Interior and Municipalities in the caretaker government, asked the Commander of the Lebanese Army, Joseph Aoun, to support and protect the prison’s surroundings after the fire spread to the upper floors of it.
