MP: Overturning Greek ruling on Iranian oil result of Tehran powerful policy

Tehran, IRNA – Greece’s recent move to overturn a court ruling over the confiscation of an Iranian oil cargo was the result of Iran’s powerful behavior, Ali Babaei Karnami, Vice-president of the Iranian Parliament’s Committee for Social Affairs said on Thursday.

Babaei Karnami, who represents the city of Sari in parliament, told IRNA that Western states, including the United States, should realize that Iran does not allow them behave in whatever manner they wish.

He particularly criticized the US for behaving in violation of the UN Charter when it comes to international relations, and said that no one should remain silent on such a behavior by Washington.

The lawmaker said that the Iranian parliament welcomes the powerful stance by the government and stresses the need to keep that approach.

On June 9, an appeals court in central Greece overturned an earlier ruling that had allowed the US to confiscate part of an Iranian oil cargo on an Iranian-flagged tanker off the Greek coast.

That initial ruling was issued in May, leading to a strong protest from Iran which warned Greece of “punitive measures.”

Iran at that time called Greece’s seizure of its vessel and the confiscation of oil aboard it “international piracy.”

Tehran made a lot of efforts, including making contacts with the International Maritime Organization, to release the ship and its cargo.
