Muharram mourning rituals revitalize Tehran city

Tehran, IRNA – Tehran Municipality organizes special events for mourning of martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S), third Shia Imam, in the capital city, which are going to be held respecting health protocols to avoid spread of coronavirus among mourners during the holy month of Muharram, the first month in Islamic calendar.

The mourning program consists of Ta’ziyeh (Shiite epic theatre) performance conventions in the open air as well as online mourning plays under the title of “In memory of You, the city has been revitalized.”

The organizers will also commemorate those who are active in holding mourning ceremonies, including eulogists, and they will hoist black flags throughout the city to show the grief.

Kazem Davoudi, a cultural deputy of Tehran Municipality, said in accordance with the current situation, this year’s mourning ceremonies and religious rituals will be held based on health recommendations with the collaboration of mosques and other religious entities.

Municipality buildings, as well as sports clubs and cultural houses, will also be covered in black during the holy month, he said.

Cultural houses of the Municipality will organize holding 215 Ta’ziyeh performance conventions in 25 parks, holy shrines and open areas of cultural houses in Tehran.

The Ta’ziyeh performance conventions will be held before and after sunset (maghrib) call to prayer (adhan), while observing social distancing and health protocols.

Mojtaba Shokri, mayor of District 13 of Tehran, underlined that people’s contribution to the mourning ceremony help holds the ritual better.
