Makkah: The National Center for Waste Management (MWAN) said it is carrying out initiatives that aim to preserve a clean and healthy environment for pilgrims during Hajj season.
The “model camp” initiative for waste management is designed to convert food leftovers into fertilizers through a device used for the first time at the holy sites.
The device is able to absorb about 200 kilograms of food waste and transform it into soil fertilizer, estimated at 10% of the amount of food, in 12 to 18 hours, safely, without any emissions or odors during the recycling process.
The “sustainable ihram” initiative, in its third year, works on collecting and sorting pilgrims’ textile waste, including ihram garments, pillows, blankets and mattresses, recycling and distributing them.
The initiative is implemented by placing containers at the Mina camps and Makkah hotels to collect pilgrims’ textiles. It is expected to collect 50 tons of ihram outfits and more than 300,000 pillows, in cooperation with relevant authorities
