RGA Holds Workshop on Saudi Highway Code

The Roads General Authority (RGA) held a workshop on the Saudi Highway Code for representatives of several concerned entities.

The aim was to highlight the importance of a road code and the authority’s role in ensuring compliance with it, and to disseminate its content.

The workshop also introduced a plan for holding training courses for employees in concerned entities as part of the authority’s endeavor to ensure the Saudi Highway Code objectives are grasped by stakeholders.

The authority noted that the workshop aimed to introduce the scope and objectives of the code, and present the training packages being prepared. It also aimed to explain the mechanism designed to activate the code and to collect questions and feedback from participants.

According to the authority, the code will be introduced in three phases: in the first, awareness raising will continue until the end of 2024; the second, which will be mandatory for public entities, will begin early next year; the third, starting on June 1, 2025,
will be mandatory for both the public and private sectors.

RGA said that the code will serve as a unified technical point of reference for all levels of road authorities in the Kingdom; it aims to achieve a minimum acceptable level of quality, safety, economic efficiency, environment standards, and sustainability.

The code consists of 25 volumes distributed to several key areas, mainly road planning and preliminary studies; the design, construction, and maintenance of roads, bridges, and tunnels; traffic engineering and road safety; environmental aspects of roads; and requirements from autonomous vehicles.
