Saudi Arabia Leads the Way on World Environment Day

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia takes center stage tomorrow as it marks World Environment Day, under the theme “Our Land, Our Future”, at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh.

It is a global event, the largest international platform for raising environmental awareness marked by over 150 countries and millions of people around the world.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture emphasized the Kingdom’s pioneering role in leading green efforts. It highlighted the numerous initiatives aimed at preserving the environment, enhancing the sustainability of vegetation cover, combating desertification and drought, protecting natural habitats, reducing carbon emissions, and raising environmental awareness among local and regional communities.

These endeavors include large-scale afforestation and rehabilitation projects implemented through the Saudi Green and Middle East Green initiatives, whose goal is to plant a staggering 50 billion trees across th
e Middle East; 10 billion will be planted in the Kingdom itself, representing 5% of the global afforestation target.

The G20 Global Land Initiative, launched during Saudi Arabia’s G20 presidency in 2020, will further contribute to global momentum. The initiative aims to motivate the world to participate in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which will be held in Riyadh this December.
