Saudi Arabia Participates in 2nd Meeting of U.N. CERF Advisory Group

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia participated in the second meeting of the Advisory Group for the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Assistant Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) for Planning and Development, Dr. Aqeel bin Jamaan Al-Ghamdi, represented the Kingdom in the meeting.

The meeting also was attended by Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths.

The meeting was initiated by the Chair of the CERF’s Advisory Group, Susanne Fries-Gaier, who welcomed the members and reviewed the agenda of the group for the meeting.

Griffiths addressed the humanitarian situation worldwide, pointing to challenges facing the world from an economic perspective and concerning humanitarian crises. He also highlighted refugee challenges in Sudan’s neighboring countries considering the ongoing conflicts and praised Saudi Arabia’s support since the crisis began.

In his speech during the meeting, Dr. Aqeel emphasized the importance of proactive work, which enables the international community to plan in advance for crises and reduce their risks. He also highlighted the need to develop early warning systems, particularly at the local level, and to disseminate proactive measures in national disaster management systems.

Dr. Aqeel concluded his speech by referring to the impossibility of predicting changing humanitarian crises, calling for flexibility in financial allocations, and prioritizing responding to changing needs.
