Riyadh: Saudi Arabia will participate in the 2024 UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, scheduled from July 8 to 18, 2024, in New York City. The forum aims to assess global efforts and progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda.

The Saudi delegation, led by the Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal bin Fadel Alibrahim, will include representatives from 13 government agencies, such as the Ministry of Economy and Planning, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC), the National Center for Environmental Compliance (NCEC), the General Food Security Authority (GFSA), the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, the Royal Commission for AlUla Governorate, the Al Madinah Region Development Authority, the Quality of Life Program, and the Qassim
Urban Observatory.

This year, Saudi Arabia, represented by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, will present a Voluntary Local Review (VLR) that provides a detailed analysis of progress in achieving the SDGs at the local level in the Riyadh region. Saudi Arabia’s participation reflects its commitment to aligning the principles of Vision 2030 with the global framework of the SDGs. In addition to presenting the VLR, Saudi Arabia has previously submitted voluntary national reviews at the High-Level Political Forum in 2018 and 2023, showcasing significant progress in various areas of sustainable development.

As part of the delegation’s work in the 2024 High-Level Political Forum, the Ministry of Economy and Planning will hold a side event titled “Stimulating Local Efforts for the SDGs,” featuring speakers from various government agencies and international partners. The event will highlight local initiatives and projects that contribute to achieving the SDGs. The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture
will also have a pavilion at the 2024 High-Level Political Forum, showcasing the significance of the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. The pavilion will also feature the Kingdom’s preparations to host the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16) in Riyadh in December.

The 2024 High-Level Political Forum’s theme is “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises: The Effective Delivery of Sustainable, Resilient, and Innovative Solutions.” The forum will focus on in-depth reviews of several SDGs, including Goal 1 (No Poverty), Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Saudi Arabia has been participating in the Forum every year since 2017. The High-Level Political Forum has been held annually since 2015 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council
