Saudi Policies in Supporting Families and Protecting Rights of People with Disabilities are Model, Saudi Researcher Says at Human Rights Council

Dr. Ruqaya Ajaj, a Saudi researcher specializing in the rights of persons with disabilities, urged member states at the Human Rights Council to implement policies comparable to those of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She emphasized the importance of providing families with the necessary resources and promoting public awareness campaigns.

This occurred during her participation as a keynote speaker in a panel discussion on the obligations of states regarding the role of the family in supporting the human rights of its members, held during the 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. She was joined by representatives of the Working Group on discrimination against women and girls and the International Labour Organization.

Dr. Ruqaya also shared the challenges she faced in her education due to her sight loss and how, with the support of her family and relevant authorities in Saudi Arabia, she was able to overcome these obstacles and achieve notable success. She praised the Kingdom’s support for individu
als with disabilities under the framework of Vision 2030, which prioritizes their rights.

During the panel discussion, a decision was made by Saudi Arabia and several other countries on the significance of the family in supporting human rights. This decision is part of the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to document and strengthen family values and ties on both regional and international levels.
