Scout Leader Speaks 6 Languages to Help Hajj Pilgrims

Madinah: The Hajj season witnesses a unique display of devotion, camaraderie, and volunteerism. Amid this vibrant landscape, 70-year-old scout leader Abdulwahed bin Abdulmalik Khayyat stands out for his unwavering dedication and exceptional language skills.

For over 25 years, Khayyat has served pilgrims at the Al-Aziziyah Camp in Makkah. He embodies the international scout motto, “Scout of one day, Scout of eternity,” highlighting that age is no barrier as long as the commitment to service continues.

What sets Khayyat apart is his fluency in six languages — English, Hausa, Urdu, Indonesian, Persian, and Arabic. His linguistic skill allows him to bridge communication gaps and assist pilgrims from diverse backgrounds. He believes serving pilgrims strengthens the spirit of community and fosters a sense of responsibility among volunteers.

“Seeing older members share the honor with them motivates young scouts,” Khayyat says. “Their sincerity and enthusiasm push them to offer exceptional service, seeking reward
from Allah.”

Khayyat’s dedication inspires, demonstrating that even at an advanced age, one can make a significant contribution to the Hajj experience.
