Somali authorities announced Sunday the killing of 18 members of the Al-Shabaab militia linked to Al-Qaeda in a planned military operation carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) in cooperation with international allies in the Lower Shabelle region, southern Somalia.

The military operation came after receiving information indicating that members of Al-Shabaab militia gathered in farms in the Balad Al-Amin and Balad Al-Kareem areas in Lower Shabelle, Somali National News Agency (SONNA) quoted Somali army officers as saying.

SNA has fully taken control of the areas where the operation occurred and is conducting operations to track down the remainder of the militia.
