United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the eruption of violence between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces Saturday.
In a statement, the UN Chief called on the leaders of both parties to immediately stop the violence and start dialogue to resolve the current crisis.
The statement also quoted Guterres as saying that any further escalation would have catastrophic effects on civilians and exacerbate the difficult humanitarian situation in Sudan, calling on the member states of the international organization in the region to support efforts to restore order and return to the transitional path.
Earlier, clashes broke out between Sudanese army and paramilitary forces as talks aiming to reach a final political agreement had recently failed. The agreement was supposed to allow the Rapid Support Forces to merge into the Sudanese army and form a civil government.
