US resorts to tactics to put blame on Iran in Vienna talks

Tehran, IRNA – As the talks in Vienna, Austria, to lift anti-Iran sanctions and revive the 2015 nuclear deal comes closer to the end, the United States resorts to blame game, as Washington sets unfounded deadlines and plays factsheet game in a bid to avoid showing accountability and adopting political decisions.

The Vienna talks have experienced busy days, when Iranian top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani along with his accompanying team continue talks at different levels with European trio (Britain, France and Germany) as well as other members of the Joint Commission meetings of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Representatives from Iran, the European Union and the P4+1 group (Britain, France, China, Russia plus Germany) have underlined that the negotiations are coming to the conclusion and that the US as the party who withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018 should take decision in order to accept Iran’s conditions for returning to the nuclear agreement.

Bagheri Kani tweeted on Wednesday: “After weeks of intensive talks, we are closer than ever to an agreement; nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, though. Our negotiating partners need to be realistic, avoid intransigence and heed lessons of past 4yrs. Time for their serious decisions.”

According to IRNA correspondent in Vienna, consultations among negotiating delegations have increased in last days and the teams continue discussions from dawn to dusk.

Russia confirms Iran’s stances on the negotiations, underlining that the United States should take the first step to pave the way for reaching a final agreement in Vienna.

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, wrote on his Twitter account after a meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday: “Visited today the #IAEA Director General Mr. Rafael Grossi. We discussed #JCPOA-related issues. The Agency has a vital role to play in restoration of the nuclear deal.”

Reuters alleged in a Thursday report that the news agency has received information on parts of agreements between Iran and the P4+1, but Iranian top nuclear negotiator has emphasized that the negotiations reached to the phase of decision-making in recent days.

That is not the first time that Reuters and other Western media outlets publish unbased reports on the Vienna talks and it seems that it will not be the last unfounded factsheet of negotiation contents.

Some sources believe that the factsheet game, when it comes to political decision-making, is being pursued to affect negotiating teams.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, reacted in a message on his Twitter account on Thursday: “Misinformation disguised as reporting is dangerous. The final deal to let the US return to the JCPOA will be far from the unsourced spin making the rounds. It won’t be a bilateral agreement either. Expect more spin as we approach final days.”

Ulyanov ruled out the alleged report, noting that prisoners exchange has nothing to do with the nuclear deal; so, the issue will not be mentioned in a potential final agreement.

The United States is expected to stop proposing fake deadlines, which are changing constantly and focus on adopting necessary decisions to help progress in the Vienna talks.

Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, twitted: “The US and Europe failed the test of their compliance with JCPOA. Regarding the economic field and the lifting of sanctions, JCPOA has now become an empty shell for #Iran. There will be no extra-JCPOA talks with the committed US and inactive Europe.”

The eighth round of talks in Vienna kicked off from December 27, 2021. Delegations from Iran, the EU and the P4+1 are busy to finalize a draft for final agreement to revive the JCPOA and remove anti-Iran sanctions.
