1st round of talks between Iran, Russian officials kicks off
Moscow, The first round of talks between Iranian Foreign Minister's senior assistant for special political affairs Ali Asghar Khaji and Russian officials on the current developments in Syria and the Middle East region kicked off in Moscow on Monday.
Iran's envoy conferred with Russia's special representative for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin on current developments in Syria.
Domestic and foreign reporters attended the meeting in which both sides expressed the hope to exchange their views in detail.
Developments in Syria such as initiation of Syrian constitution committee, new round of talks with Russia, Iran and Turkey on resolving Syrian crisis were topics of the agenda in today's meeting.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia supports Iran's proposal to leaders of the Persian Gulf states to sign a nonaggression pact.
Relations between Tehran and Moscow under the current economic sanctions are of prime importance at this sensitive juncture, Khaji said.
Good neighborly relations between Tehran and Moscow are of strategic importance, Khaji said.
Tehran is to appreciate Russia for its stances in dealing with the US illegal measures, he added.
Khaji also expressed the hope that these exchange of visits would lead to bolstering peace in the region and in the world as well as fight against terrorism.
Russian envoy to Syria, for his part, said Moscow is to examine expansion of cooperation with Tehran on regional and international issues as well as those in the UNSC and the UN General Assembly.
Russia and the Islamic Republic of Iran underlined the need to respect UN Charters, rights of countries' sovereignty, right of nations to make decisions on their fate mainly in the Middle East region, Sergey Vershinin said.
He also expressed the hope that talks with Iranian officials would lead to restoration of stability to the region.
