AFC U23 C’ship: Iran 1-0 China
Team Melli Omid have been eliminated from the AFC under-23 championship title race, despite a 1-0 win over group C rivals China.
After a draw and a loss in their opening 2 matches, Iran's hopes of staying in Thailand beyond Wednesday, relied on a change of fortunes, but Chinese keeper, Chen Wei, stood tall against Hamid Estili's side, who endured another wasteful first half despite 14 shots at goal.
Iran continued to threaten in the 2nd period, and were given a lifeline when they were awarded a late penalty, with captain Noorafkan stepping up to stroke them into the lead with 3 minutes to go.
The Iranians poured forward in search of the all-important 2nd, but Mehdi Ghaedi headed wide, when the keeper had left an open net, squandering one of the last opportunities of the game, as Iran's olympic dream was dashed. In the other match-up, reigning champions Uzbekistan confirmed their spot in the quarter-finals despite a narrow 2-1 defeat to an already-qualified Korea Republic.
