Archeologists discover broken clay artifact in N. eastern Iran

Tehran, Aug 28, A piece of broken clay work with some letters in the Parthian Pahlavi script was discovered during the archeological explorations in Tappeh (Hill) Takhcharabad in Birjand, South Khorasan Province, which dates back to the late New Iron Age.

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) quoted Mohsen Dana, head of the third season of archeological explorations in Tappeh Takhcharabad as saying The letters written on the clay work have been cut with a sharp object over it after it became dry.

Based on the evidence obtained from the previous two seasons, this building was dated to the late New Iron Age and early Achaemenid period, he said.

The architectural remains obtained in this season of archeological explorations at the highest level consist of the walls and spaces, floors, fireplaces and findings such as clay works, tools and stone to sharpen knife, he said.

He pointed to the extensive exploration effort conducted in the third season of archeological explorations to identify the nature of the building and the potential spaces within it, saying at the end of this season the outer plan was fully explored and up to the depth of about 1.5 meters from the highest level of the hill was unearthed from the soil.

In the explorations it was found out that the Takhcharabad building is an adobe and stratum building in the form of irregular circle with six solid towers on its surrounding, Dana added.

The semi-residential spaces discovered in the third season of explorations along with the apparent ritual spaces unearthed in the second explorations show that a small number (probably druids) were living in those spaces in the Parthian era where they held their ritual ceremonies.

The third season of archaeological explorations in the area aimed to complete the remaining part of the outer plan of the adobe building.
