CTBTO executive secretary supports Iran nuclear deal
Vienna, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization Lassina Zerbo on Monday voiced support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
If the United States gives up its threats of killing the nuclear deal, Iran might be willing to approve the Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, Zerbo told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of 2018 Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Any support for the JCPOA will encourage Iran to approve Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, he said, adding he was hopeful Iran will do so if trusted.
The international community has supported the JCPOA and called for its implementation but US President Donald Trump has threatened not to verify Iran's commitment to the deal and thus will not extend anti-Iran sanctions waiver if what he called as flaws of the deal are not rectified until May 12.
This is while, the European Union, China, Russia and Germany on various occasions and during press conferences at the UN headquarters in New York Monday called for preservation of the deal. French President Emmanuel Macron has traveled to Washington to remind the US president of the need to stay in the JCPOA
