Discussing prisoner swap with US not new: Iran
Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said the issue of discussing swap of prisoners with the US has been raised since a long time ago and is not something new.
He made the remarks in response to a question by the reporters on Iran's readiness to swap prisoners with the US suggested by Zarif during his recent visit to New York.
He further noted that before US announcement to withdraw from the JCPOA, the American party always talked about the issue during all the meetings on the sidelines of the joint meetings on JCPOA.
The Iranian side also seized the opportunity to talk about Iranians detained in the US or other countries at the order of the country, Mousavi said, noting that after direct meetings were cut off, the issue was pursued through the mediators.
Iran proposed swap of the prisoners not negotiations about outstanding issues, he said.
However, the US did not give positive response to Iran's proposal, he said, noting that the proposal and the opposing party's refusal to show suitable reaction helped to take away the lever of propaganda against Iran from the US which used to shed crocodile tears on the inmates.
Islamic Republic of Iran will use all in power to pursue the case of the Iranian inmates in the US and other countries and relieve their families' pains, Mousavi said.
