Heavy Fighting in Mosul’s Tahrir District
Heavy fighting has broken out in Mosul's eastern Tahrir neighbourhood on Wednesday where Iraqi special forces have said a suicide car bomber from the Islamic State group (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh/IS) has disabled an Abrams tank belonging to the Iraqi army.
Backed by U.S.-led airstrikes but under fire from heavy weapons, the troops drove deeper into the neighbourhood as families fled their homes; AP reported.
IS-fired mortar rounds killed a child and wounded five others, according to Kurdish Rudaw TV. According to Brig. Gen. Haider Fadhil special forces now control 70 percent of the Tahrir district, where most residents are sheltering indoors. He said forces killed dozens of IS fighters.
In the same district, security forces arrested four IS militants, two Iraqis and two Arab foreign fighters, and locked them in a Humvee, bound and blindfolded.
