Icelandic filmmaker: We all need to be loved

Tehran, A movie director from the verdurous country of Iceland has stressed the significance of love in shaping the children's character.

GuArAn Ragnarsdottir presented her first movie dubbed 'Summer Children' to Iran's 31st International Film Festival for Children and Youth, currently vying for the international feature-length film prize.

The plot of Summer Children revolves around two young siblings, only five and six years old, when their parents' marriage breaks apart. As their mother struggles to find her footing following the divorce, they are sent to countryside children's home.

Talking to festival's reporter he said, The film is actually based on my personal story, my hardships in childhood, when I was four or five years old. I had to leave home and dwell in a summer house. For a child of that early age, it is so hard to feel that unloved, she said in an interview with the reporter at the festival's news headquarters.

We don't suddenly become a person. We're not all of a sudden a teenager, or an adult. Everything begins with childhood. It shapes our personality, she added.

Formerly a graphic designer, one day she made up her mind to pursue the dream of filmmaking, and got a Master's Degree from the US. Having tackled the funding issues, she managed to produce her first feature film that has now received international recognition.

When asked about her stance on children movies, Ragnarsdottir commented that kids should be given the chance to get familiar with different approaches and views, not utterly restricted to a certain perspective.

According to this female director, the Icelandic government dedicates special finance packages to children filmmakers.

GuArAn also told the reporter about her admiration of the late Abbas Kiarostami, and her experience of watching Asghar Farhadi's The Salesman that won the 2017 Academy Award.

The festival opened on August 30 in central Province of Isfahan and was wrapped up on September 5.
