IONS 2018 kicks off in Tehran on Monday
Tehran, April 23, IRNA - The 6th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS 2018) started with the attendance of 35 high-profile military delegations in Tehran on Monday.
IONS 2018 consists of 23 permanent members and 9 observers, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi earlier said.
Iran Navy is the permanent member of the IONS , he said.
The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium is the biggest military summit in Iran's history and its hosting has been ceded to Iran for two years.
The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, commonly known as IONS, is a series of biennial meetings among the littoral states of the Indian Ocean region.
It provides a forum to increase maritime security cooperation, discuss regional maritime issues and promote friendly relationship among the member nations.
IONS is a security structure for the Indian Ocean region which is similar to the Western Pacific Naval Symposium. It is a voluntary initiative among the navies and maritime security agencies of the member nations.
In addition to the symposium, numerous other activities like workshops, essay competitions and lectures will also held under auspices of the organization.
Iran is scheduled to assume the presidency of the meeting today.
