Iran, Azerbaijan mull feasibility of power plant, dam construction
Baku, Iran and Azerbaijan have studied the feasibility of two development projects for the construction of power plants at Khoda Afarin and Qiz Qalasi dams on the Aras River.
The Azerbaijani Energy Ministry has written in its website that the IranAzerbaijan Technical Committee in a meeting in Azerbaijan, the Energy Ministry also considered future measures and commitments of related institutions to implement the project.
'The project is of strategic importance; So, expediting the construction and exchange of information on the issue is very important, "said Elnur Sultanov, Azeri Deputy Minister of Energy and Azeri Head of IranAzerbaijan Joint Technical Committee Elnur Sultanov.
In August 2016, Iran's lawmakers approved a bill on joint construction of two hydropower plants with Azerbaijan.
The bill authorizes the construction of the plants near the Aras River border in the Iranian city of Marazad and the Azerbaijani Ordubad.
This was part of several topics that Iran and Azerbaijan agreed on in a basic agreement they signed in December 2015.
The document provides for cooperation in the construction of power plants at Khoda Afarin and Qiz Qalasi dam on Aras River, as well as Ordubad power plant construction is the Azerbaijani side and the Marazad power plant on the Iranian side.
