Iran condemns terror attack on church in Dagestan
Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi on Monday condemned an armed attack by Daesh terrorist group on a church in Dagestan republic of Russian Federation which left several people killed and many others wounded.
In a message, Qasemi also expressed sympathy with the government, nation and bereaved families of the victims in Dagestan republic.
Massacring innocent people in holy religious sites and showing enmity with religions are the characteristics of groups which cross all religious and ethical borders to cause panic, spread hatred and ultimately achieve their sinister goals.
A man in Russia's southern province of Dagestan shot into a crowd of people leaving a church on Sunday, killing five and injuring at least five others, According to Russian news agencies.
The attack occurred in the village of Kizlyar in the Muslim-majority republic of Dagestan.
The small republic in the Caucasus mountains borders Chechnya, where Moscow has led two wars against separatists and radical religious groups since the 1991 Soviet collapse and which has seen a large number of people join Isis.
the attack occurred as churchgoers celebrated Maslenitsa, a Christian holiday marking the last day before Lent according to the eastern Orthodox calendar.
