Iran FM official: Continued US, EU sanctions no help in resolving Syrian crisis

Tehran, IRNA –Iranian Foreign Ministry official in political affairs Ali Asghar Khaji said in Geneva on Tuesday that the continuation of American and European sanctions against Syria is obviously no help in resolving the crisis in that country.

Khaji in his Tuesday evening meeting with Italy’s Special Envoy on Syrian Affairs Stephan Ravonan urged the return of refugees to their countries, uprooting terrorism and restoration of peace and stability to Syria, which he said will lead to greater regional stability.

He added that the US and EU sanctions are no help is resolving the crisis in Syria.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Syrian Constitution meeting in Geneva, in which the latest developments in Syria were discussed.

Ravonan said that Iran is a major player in the region, and especially in Syria.

“The Italian government supports campaign against terrorism, solving the Syrian crisis through diplomatic channels and offering humanitarian aids to the Syrian people by the EU and the UN,” added the Italian envoy.

Khaji, too, highlighted the Syrian people’s need to receive humanitarian aids in the meeting.
