Iran kicks off Asian Cup 2019 with 5-0 victory over Yemen
In the AFC Asian Cup, Iran's national team have started the 2019 campaign with an emphatic 5-0 victory, after thrashing Yemen, in the group D opener.
Team Melli dominated the match from the onset and got to the score-sheet, when Mahdi Taremi scored on a rebound as early as the 12th minute.
Iran made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute, after a great free kick by Ashkan Dejagah, which was deflected off the post and hit the keeper's head to find its way into the back of the net.
Just two minutes later, Taremi scored his second by a world class header from the center of the box. Then Carlos Queiroz's side made 4-nothing, when Sardar Azmoun netted from close range before the hour mark.
Saman Qoddos added the icing on the cake, scoring the fifth with a powerful shot from the edge of box with 13 minutes remaining. In its next game, Iran will play against Vietnam on Saturday.
