Iran looking for strategic ties with China

Beijing, Iran seeks strategic and longterm relations with China, said a member of Iran's Expediency Council on Tuesday, as Tehran is looking to consolidate ties with the rising Asian economic power following the US moves to curtail Iran oil exports.

We want longterm and strategic ties with China and one of the requirements for that is cultural exchanges, said Gholam Ali Haddad Adel, a member of Iran's Expediency Council that is in Beijing to take part in One Belt, One Road conference.

'In our foreign policy, the basis is strengthening political, economic and cultural relations with the neighbouring countries, Asian and eastern nations, such as China and Russia enjoy especial places in our foreign strategy,' he added.

The Iranian official stressed that Tehran is keen on developing ties with 'the countries that don't want to dominate us and interfere in the nation's destiny'.

He took China as an example, saying China's experience shows that 'whenever nations move towards independence, other countries will be let down'.

'As a big and ancient country, China has a special place in Iran's foreign policy. Iran and China are two of the Asian Continent's big and ancient nations that have had long economic and cultural relations, Haddad Adel said.
