IRAN PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL ENVOY ON MALAYSIA VISIT
The Special Envoy of the President of Iran and Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, Dr Masoumeh Ebtekar, will undertake a one-day working visit to Malaysia today as part of her tour of the Asia Pacific region.
According to a statement from Wisma Putra, (Malaysian Foreign Minsitry) Ebtekar will be accompanied by Iran Deputy Minister of Oil Marzieh Shahdaei and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Department of Women and Family Affairs.
"During the visit, Ebtekar will be paying a courtesy call on Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. She will also be meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Saifuddin Abdullah," the statement said.
Wisma Putra said the visit by Ebtekar serves to foster relations between the leaderships of both countries, especially with the appointment of Dr Mahathir as the Prime Minister.
It said Malaysia and Iran continued to enjoy friendly bilateral relations as Iran was an important trading partner of Malaysia and its fourth largest trading partner in the West Asian region.
In 2017, bilateral trade between the two countries amounted to RM4.52 billion, an increase of 61.2 per cent from RM2.81 billion recorded in 2016.
Both countries have cooperated closely in many important areas of common interest at international forums under the auspices of the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Developing 8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation (D-8).
