IRAN STRONGLY CONDEMNS ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT AGAINST VENEZUELAN PRES MADURO

The Iranian foreign ministry strongly deplored the Saturday assassination attempt against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, stressing that the move was aimed at fomenting instability and insecurity in the country.

"We consider the act as a move to stir instability and insecurity in Venezuela and to the benefit of the enemies of the country's government and people and we strongly condemn it," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said.

Maduro survived an assassination attempt after several drone explosions disrupted a speech at a military event.

The drones, armed with explosives, were flown towards Maduro as he addressed soldiers in the capital Caracas on Saturday afternoon.

The drones did not reach him, though it is not clear if they were shot down or exploded prematurely. The president survived unharmed while seven people were injured in the attack, the country's information minister said.

Maduro suggested an initial investigation showed Colombia and the US state of Florida, where many Venezuelan exiles live, were linked to the explosions.

Speaking from the presidential palace two hours after the attack, he announced that those behind the attempt on his life had been captured.
