Iran VP hails popular feature of Arbaeen ceremony
Iran's First VicePresident Eshaq Jahangiri said on Tuesday popularity is the most distinctive feature of Arbaeen which is observed by Muslims to mark the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of the third Imam of Shias, Imam Hussein AS .
'Arbaeen procession revives the antityrannical feature of Islam,' Jahangiri told reporters in the Iraqi city of Najaf.
Jahangiri, accompanied by Minister of Sports and Youth Masood Soltanifar and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran AliAkbar Salehi, is in Iraq to attend the huge congregation of Arbaeen.
Arbaeen bears many political, social and cultural messages, serving as a very important symbol in the world of Islam, he said.
He also thanked Iraqis people and officials for hosting so many Iranians who are in Iraq for pilgrimage visits.
Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
Each year, millions of Iranian Shia Muslims and Muslims from other countries travel to the holy cities of Iraq to make Arbaeen pilgrimage. This year Arbaeen falls on October 30.
