Iran’s shipbuilding on commercialization track

Bandar Abbas, IRNA – Delivering an ocean-going Aframax tanker order by Venezuela revived hopes in Iran that the Iranian shipbuilding industry could be commercialized to further economic development.

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi ealier this month officially delivered a Venezuelan-ordered oil tanker manufactured by an Iranian company to Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro during his visit to Tehran.

Shipbuilding industry emerged in Iran over 50 years and has since tried to expand and upgrade technical and scientific knowledge. The industry has now established itself among the world’s big shipbuilders by manufacturing tankers and repairing various types of giant ships inside Iran and abroad.

Hormozgan Province in southern Iran which lies on the coast of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea has the biggest share in building and repairing various types of vessels, rigs, barges, and oil and gas platforms in the Middle East due to its great capacity in maritime activities, with 47 shipbuilding units.

Iran Shipbuilding & Offshore Industries Complex (ISOICO is the biggest maritime and offshore industrial complex in Iran which was founded 50 years ago in Bandar Abbas.

Industrial Development and Renovation Organization of Iran (IDRO) is the national body governing shipbuilding industry which includes more a dozen companies.

ISOICO was underestimated since a decade ago because of a lack of domestic backing which led to deferrals in delivery of orders, but it has transitioned into an internationally active company with the endeavors made by Iranian experts.

Over 5,000 people are working in shipbuilding industry and it has caused downstream industries to bloom. ISOICO has in its vision the goal to be exemplary in the industry in the Persian Gulf region.

The latest product of the company is a 50-ton fishing vessel with 64 meters length and 12 meters width which has a -18 degree cold storage and a -30 degree individual quick freezing unit. The ship has been designed and built by ISOICO from scratch.

Giant ships were built and repaired in neighboring countries in the past, but ISOICO has domesticized all the process by launching several dry docks.

President Raisi’s administration has paid special importance to shipbuilding industry since he took office last year which was displayed in the delivery of the second Aframax tanker to Venezuela during an official visit by the country’s president.
