Iraq’s exPM: Baghdad opposes US pressure on Iran
Baghdad, Referring to the US escalation of tensions in the region, Iraq's former prime minister Ayad Allawi said that Baghdad opposes economic restrictions on Iran and any possible invasion against the country.
Allawi, also the head of Iraq's alWataniya (National) coalition, made the remarks speaking in Baghdad on Sunday with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
He said that he has told the Americans that weakening Islamic Republic of Iran would not benefit anyone.
Underlining the significance of adherence to international regulations and treaties, Allawi said, We urge all sides to sit at the negotiating table and rid the region of [a new] tension.
He noted that his country opposes any sanctions which target the Iranian people.
The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, appreciated Iraq's deescalating efforts in the region.
