Beijing, A top Iranian media chief stressed Monday the importance of expanding media ties among the Asian countries as the media play an important role in the present era.
Media play an effective role in bringing various cultures closer to one another, the role which can make the world public opinions united on major issues, Managing Director of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Zia Hashemi said at a media gathering in China.
Hashemi made the remarks in a meeting held on the sidelines of the Annual Conference of Boao Forum for Asia with participation of a number of senior Asian media chiefs.
In the meeting, the IRNA chief underlined the importance of strengthening cultural and media interactions among the countries lying along the Silk Road now called 'One Belt, One Road'.
It was in 2013 that the Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced the 'One Belt, One Road' initiative, a plan to link China with Asia, Africa and Europe via a network of ports, railways and roads.
Cultural cooperation is important for nations to get acquainted with one another, said Hashemi, adding media in the region should be used for making the Asian countries aware (of the global and regional developments).
Asian media should react to distortion of information and facts on the parts of certain hostile media, the IRNA chief stressed.
On the sidelines of the today gathering in China's Hainan, Hashemi held separate meetings with media directors from Pakistan, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Thailand, Nepal, the UAE and Sri Lanka.
The four-day Boao Forum for Asia, also known as Asia's Davos, is held annually in which IRNA managing director delivers a speech.
Launched in 2001, Boao has been considered as a platform to build Asian consensus, promote regional cooperation and advance the continent's influence on the world stage.
