Italy beats Iran with straight sets in FIVB Volleyball Nations League
Italian volleyball players have defeated Iran's national team in straight sets at the 2018 Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Volleyball Men's Nations League.
The Azzurri sealed an emphatic win in the second week of the tournament by defeating Iran 3-0 (2325, 1825 and 2025) in a Pool 7 match played at the indoor Estadio Aldo Cantoni arena in Argentina's western city of San Juan on Saturday afternoon local time.
The players from both teams looked confident and strong-minded as they came out on the court. They started the match with vim and vigor.
The Azzuri slammed fine spikes and blocked the ball well as their opponents were fighting tooth and nail to notch up points.
The Italians, however, availed themselves of the Iranians' individual mistakes to close out the set at 25-23.
The Italy men's national volleyball team maintained the lead as the game progressed and went into the second set.
Iranian volleyball players then sought to claw back into the game in the face of Italy's stalwart performance. It was the Italian team that powered through and won the set 25-18 at the end.
Iran's Montenegrin coach Igor Kolakovic introduced a number of substitutes to reverse the course at the start of the third set. Both teams were trailing each other tightly.
The Italians took up the last remaining opportunities to surge ahead, and finished the set 25-20.
The national Iranian men's volleyball team is scheduled to play against Canada on Sunday.
The 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League kicked off on May 25, and will run through July 8 in 22 host cities.
A total of 16 teams compete in a round-robin format with every core team hosting a pool at least once.
The teams are divided into four pools of four teams at each week and compete five weeks long, with a total of 120 matches.
The top five teams after the preliminary round join the host of the final round to compete in the final round.
The relegation takes in consideration only the 4 challenger teams.
The last-ranked challenger team plays the promotion play-off against the Challenger Cup winners. The winners of the play-off will qualify for the next edition as a challenger team.
