Minister: Vatican, Iran share stances
Tehran, Sep 6, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Abbas Salehi met visiting Vatican Minister of Foreign Affairs Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher here on Wednesday afternoon.
During the meeting, Salehi said that Vatican shares similar stances with Iran on issues like peace and stability in the Middle East as well as opposing the religious and ethnic extremism and defending establishment of families.
He added that mutual cooperation between Iran and the Holy See will pave the way for more serious follow-up of these common stances.
Salehi told reporters that during the meeting issues like advantages of divine religions in Iran and appropriate atmosphere for co-existence between followers of religions were discussed.
In the recent decades, ties between Iran and Vatican were developing firmly, library and documentary ties, translation of some Christianity works in Persian, meetings between political leaders and holding dialogues between religious leaders have happened and prepare grounds for better and more promising future in relations.
Archbishop Gallagher told reporters that the visit of Vatican minister is taking place in response to visit of President Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to Vatican two years ago.
He said it was an opportunity to discuss different regional issues with the minister of culture, adding, 'We also talked about Catholic community in Iran.'
Archbishop Paul Gallagher also met Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday.
