Over 5 tons of illicit drugs seized in SE Iran in 10 days

Zahedan, Around 5,461 kilograms of narcotics have been confiscated over the past 10 days in SistanBaluchestan, said the police commander in Iran's southeastern province.

The figure includes 5,447 kilograms of opium and about 13 kilograms of heroin, Mohammad Qanbari said.

Police forces also busted four drug trafficking bands and arrested eight smugglers as well as seven military weapons with ammunitions, 12 vehicles, and other equipment during the operations, Qanbari added.

Iran's SistanBaluchestan Province has 1,100 km of joint borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Much of the illicit drugs are believed to be produced in the two countries.
